Reflection/ Response to experimentation/problems solved this week

I think making my tribal characters' Necklaces was quite challenging in the sense that my illustration designs were really optimistic and complex in contrast with the materials i had that could replicate the resources my tribe would use in madagascar to create their necklaces. I tried to follow my illustrations and use it as a guide as best as i could, but freestyling the designs in some aspects was much easier. I also think freestyling the necklace designs felt easier as i already previously established my favourite piece of clothing for my tribal characters, so i based the necklaces on how they would compliment my feathered/spiney garments. i think i could also add a bit more detail to my favourite designs by finding smaller bits of material like chia seed and grounded coffee.

Painting both the head and body was a good way of establishing and testing what colours and undertones are needed to the skin colour of my tribe. Madagascar is the east of africa and lies on the indian ocean so the people of Madagascar are mixed with African,asian and polynesian. Their dark skin is a product of their sunny climate. I would say that i could make the skin colour of my figure a bit lighter with a bit more red/ yellow undertone to create grether depth of texture in the skin as the body seems to be a flat dark tone. The face has managed to capture a little texture, where you can see the yellow streaks/ patches on areas of the face. I think the reason the body is one dark tone is due to starting with a dark colour to paint the body. I should have built up the layers of colour to achieve tonal variation on the body. I also need to consider that areas such as the kneecap, elbow and neck area is darker in contrast to the body for dark skin people. For my final outcome i will use these points to achieve realistic skin.

Next time i will also paint my figures white for the base coat, before adding colour, as it would help me apply my coloured paint much easier onto my clay figure.
